Development of a replacement for the TS3 began in 1964, with the intention that this motor would be available in 1971 or 1972. The four cylinder TS4 solved many of the issues found in service with the TS3. 14 prototype motors were built with 4 surviving, 3 in Museums and the fourth now restored and running in New Zealand.
