Right from earliest production days, Commer released a range of passenger service vehicles in addition to the truck range. Post World War II saw the introduction of the Commando bus / coach based on the heavier Q range, and on Feb 28 1948, the Avenger chassis was released. In 1954, the TS3 two - stroke motor was made available for the Avenger range, offering excellent fuel-economy. While not as common as other bus chassis, many excellent bodies were mounted on Avenger chassis, including Duple, Harrington and others. In New Zealand, 55 Avenger chassis were purchased by the New Zealand Railways Road Services, as well as others by individual operators. A large number of Avenger chassis were also used in Australia

Another (ex NZRRS?) Avenger photographed in Invercargill by Jeff Ross in 2006. According to another publication, 45 were purchased by the New Zealand Government owned New Zealand Railways Road Services in 1949/1950. After this, they used Bedford SB3s almost exclusively and according to reports, New Zealand was one of the biggest users of SB3s outside of Britain with over 2000 being brought into New Zealand. Bus spotters in New Zealand would probably say the majority still survive and most are still on the road!
Sister to the Avenger above, this one is at the Glendhu Bay camping ground at Wanaka and has been there as long as I can remember. Taken Easter 2006
